The Covenant

Synopsis of Scenes and Musical Numbers

Chapter 1 – The Promise of God to Abraham

The story begins 4000 years ago, with the powerful calling of God to Abraham. He is told to leave his land and family, and go to a land that God will show him. He is promised countless descendants and that through him, the blessings of God will come upon all the families of the earth. God establishes His covenant between Himself, Abraham and his descendants – that He will be their God, and they will be His people.

Chapter 2 – The Hebrews in Egypt

The descendants of Abraham through Isaac, and Jacob, are led to Egypt, and there the nation of the Hebrews is formed under immense suffering and slavery.

Due to the rapid growth of the Hebrew nation under Pharaoh, he sought to destroy all the newborn Hebrew boys. In this dramatic setting, we follow the story of baby Moses and his family and how the Hebrews cried out to their God.

The kingdom of Israel was built up under the leadership of David, but his son Salomon turned away from the Lord and Israel was divided. The northern part, Israel, is first brought into captivity in Assyria, and later the southern kingdom, Judah, is taken captive and brought to Babylon. Among the people taken away were three young men that did not obey the Babylonian king’s command to bow before him in worship. God delivered the young men from the punishment they received - the flaming furnace.

Daniel is seen comforting his people in Babylon after he has read the book of Jeremiah, and seen that after 70 years have passed, the Jewish people will be set free.
