Russian general accuses Israel of arming Georgia

By ICEJ News

19 Aug 2008

In a military briefing for the Moscow press corps on Tuesday, a top Russian general accused Israel of arming the Georgian military in recent years, a fact that Jerusalem was hoping would receive little attention in the current fighting in the Caucus region. Russian Deputy Chief of General Staff Col.-Gen. Anatoly Nogovitsyn accused Israel today of supplying Georgia with mines, explosive charges, special explosives for clearing minefields and eight kinds of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). "In 2007, Israeli experts trained Georgian commandos in Georgia and there were plans to supply heavy weaponry, electronic weapons, tanks and other arms at a later date, but the deal didn't work out," Nogovitsyn added. The accusations came as Russia and Georgia exchanged prisoners of war today, one of the few signs Moscow plans to honor a ceasefire that calls for the withdrawal of Russian troops from Georgian territory.
