Israel kicks off 60th Anniversary celebrations

Olmert: Israel’s survival ‘depends on our willingness to fight’

Israel launched its 60th Anniversary celebrations on a sober note on Wednesday evening, as the nation marked the annual day to remember its fallen soldiers before shifting into a joyous birthday mood after sunset.

"No one in Israel is estranged from the weight of loss," Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert told an official gathering at Mount Herzl military cemertery in Jerusalem on Yom Hazikaron - the Day of Remembrance for the nation's fallen soldiers and terror victims.

"Our entire national existence… depends on our willingness and ability to defend ourselves… to battle the enemy… Your sons and daughters gave their lives for a supreme cause," he told families who have lost loved ones in the Arab-Israeli conflict.

A two-minute siren sounded throughout Israel at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, bringing traffic to a complete halt.

"We want to end wars and continue the Zionist movement's vision. We want to shake our neighbors' hands, but we know, when necessary, to pull the trigger," said President Shimon Peres at the launch of Remembrance Day observances at the Western Wall on Tuesday night.

According to the Defense Ministry, 22,437 men and women have died since 1880 defending the Jewish State and according to Director of the National Insurance Institute Esther Dominissini on Monday, 1,634 Israeli civilians have died in terror attacks since Israel’s inception.
