Iran to build more nuclear sites

Threatens oil shipping in Straits of Hormuz

By ICEJ News

19 Aug 2008

Nuclear mushroom cloud (ICEJ archive)According to Iran’s IRNA state news service on Tuesday, Tehran is getting ready to build more nuclear facilities. Earlier, the Islamic Republic announced plans to build six more nuclear facilities by 2021. Russia is helping Iran build its first nuclear power plant in Bushehr on the southern Iranian coast, which is set to begin operation by the end of the year. Other known nuclear facilities are located at Isfahan and Natanz. Meanwhile, Iran’s air force chief General Ahmad Mighani said that the country has broadened the range of its fighter jets up to 3,000 km, enabling them to fly to and from Israel without refueling, reported Haaretz. Israeli sources were skeptical of the Iranians making any significant advancement in their air capabilities. Finally, senior Iranian officials warned that Supreme Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has ordered the army to initiate attacks aimed at closing the Straits of Hormuz to oil shipping should the US or Israel launch pre-emptive strikes against Iran's renegade nuclear program, according to a release today from MEMRI.
