Hamas suspends Schalit talks as Israel re-seals Gaza border

By ICEJ News

04 Jul 2008

Hamas announced on Friday that it will not attend next week's scheduled talks concerning the release of abducted IDF soldier Gilad Schalit because of Israeli "violations" of the Egyptian-brokered truce in Gaza. Without mentioning any specific violations, Hamas deputy Mussa Abu Marzuk said the talks were being frozen because Israel was not displaying commitment to the ceasefire. The Schalit talks were to enter an accelerated marathon format in Cairo next week, but Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak again closed off all border crossings into Gaza today following yet another Kassam rocket launch into Israel on Thursday. The crossings were temporarily opened yesterday to allow some 70 trucks filled with cement, cattle, and other commodities to enter Gaza via Israel.
