Anti-missionaries suspected in bombing of Messianic family

By ICEJ News

25 Mar 2008

Israeli police have yet to determine who left a rigged Purim gift basket outside the home of a Messianic Jewish family in Ariel last Thursday, but suspicions are growing that the attack was carried out by Jewish anti-missionary elements. Ami Ortiz, 16, was severely wounded in an explosion as he opened the package, suffering from third degree burns, shrapnel in his lungs, and other major injuries. Friends report a big turnaround in his condition due to prayer, but doctors still have him sedated and are trying to save an injured eye, an arm and a leg. Police have clamped a gag order on their investigation into the bombing incident, but his father, Pastor David Ortiz, said police are leaning towards suspecting Jewish anti-missionary activists. Although Ortiz had received threats from radical Muslims for seeking Palestinian converts in the West Bank, the family had also placed security cameras outside their apartment after Jewish anti-missionary groups began harassing them and the congregation they help lead. If the perpetrators were Jewish, it would mark the first time anti-missionary activists have staged such a malicious attack with intent to kill.
