US anti-Semitism envoy slams UN ‘double standards’ on Israel

By ICEJ News

09 Mar 2010

US President Barack Obama’s special envoy on anti-Semitism assured recently that the US will insist the UN’s Human Rights Council accomplishes its mandate on human rights violations, especially in relation to the problem of anti-Semitism. Hannah Rosenthal, head of the State Department’s Office to Monitor and Combat Anti-Semitism, spoke at the Community Security Trust (CST) annual dinner in London on Thursday about the double standard that is often applied to Israel. In the past six years, Rosenthal said, Israel has had 179 negative remarks made against it and 50 resolutions adopted by the Council have alleged that Israel abuses human rights. This she compared to North Korea and Sudan, who’ve had less than 10 censures despite their well-known re cords of human rights violations. “We will continue to see that Israel is treated fairly at the UN and in other international bodies,” Rosenthal said.
